Robber Riddle

A robber decides to rob a castle, disguised as a musician. First he hides in the bushes, because he still has to find out the password needed to get in. Just as he’s crawling behind a tree he sees a knight approaching the gatekeeper. .
“What’s chasing you, Aldus?” The gatekeeper cries out’ ‘I don’t have time for your games, just say it’ the knight says, panting. The gatekeeper says ‘Twelve’ whereupon the knight anwers ’six’. The gatekeeper smiles, opens the gate and lets the knight in.
‘Aha. The robber thinks. I think I have to say half of the sum the gatekeeper says. I’m almost sure that’s it, but I’ll wait for a bit just to make sure.’ The robber sits tight until an old lady approaches the gate.
“Hello Anna, good to see you!” The gatekeeper calls out. “Any good eggs in your basket today?”
“Lots of them” the old lady says. “And none of them for you today, so give it to me.” The gatekeeper chuckles and says “Six”. The old lady answers “three” and the gate opens up.
The robber’s completely sure now and gets from behind his tree. He walks up to the guard, who eyes him suspiciously. “State your business, stranger!” he shouts. “I am a travelling minstrel”, the robber claims,”And I have come to entertain your lord”. “Do you know the password?” the guard asks the robber. “Of course.” The robber says. “Okay… Eight”, the guard says. “Four” the robber answers. The guard looks at him and calls out “Soldiers, come quick, this man is an impostor.” The robber is apprehended and thrown in the dungeon.

the answer could also have been three - the number of letters in the number stated by the guard subtracted from that same number. Twelve has 6 letters so 12-6 would be 6, six has three letters so 6-3 would be 3 and eight has 5 letters: 8-5 is 3
that was my thought anyway, anyone else think that or is it just me complicating things?

or the answer could be much simpler. the letters of the word. twelve has six letters, six has three, and eight has five.=) five?

could also be 7,
if you follow the rule that u should add the digits in the number , multiply by 2 , then add the digits again if more than 9.
example : 12 , 1+2 =3 , double = 6 then u dont need to add the figures again cos its less than 9.
example2 : 6, no need for adding figures as its less than 9 , then double and u will get 12 , add the figures and u will get 3.
so for 8 , u dont need to add the figures so just double 8 and u will get 16 , add the digits n u will get 7
